Carrot and Peas Mashed Potatoes

By Chioma 2 Comments

carrot and peas mashed potatoesCarrot and peas mashed potatoes is a wholesome meal for babies from 9 months and it encourages them to start getting used to chewing foods as against purees which they were started with from 6 months.

Introducing chewy and lumpy foods to your baby not only broadens the variety of food you can offer, but also helps them develop their biting and chewing skills, strengthens their jaw muscles and as well improve their ability to start talking i.e. speech development.

You may sometimes be concerned about them choking or gagging on their food, but i would say it is ideal to start early and slowly introduce these lumpy foods with close supervision. I assure you, they get better with time rather than you taking them a step back out of fear…remember, practice makes perfect.

Carrot and Peas Mashed Potatoes Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 small irish potatoes
  • 1 medium  carrot
  • ½ cup peas
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 tsp butter
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 – 2 cups water

Method:

  1. Cut potatoes and carrots into small chunks, wash and put in a pot. Add one cup of water to the pot with crushed garlic and bring to boil. Allow to cook till carrots and potatoes are tender.
  2. Add the peas and allow to cook for about a minute, then remove from heat and drain off the remaining water in the pot.
  3. Using a masher, mash the potatoes, carrot and peas. Add the butter and slowly add the milk to get the desired consistency your baby will like.
  4. Spoon into bowl and serve.

∗Serve with mashed sardine for added calcium and protein.

∗You can add in flaked fish or chicken into the mash. Alternatively, use ground fish or crayfish for added flavour.

∗Add grated cheddar cheese to give it a cheesy flavour as well as some calcium.

*Stew is another great option.
